Welcome to the home of the annual Smith Mountain Lake Open Water Swim presented by the Summit Sports Group.
Each year hundreds of athletes descend upon one of Virginia’s finest destinations for a two-day event filled with good food, music, a little relaxation and most importantly open water swimming in one of the east coast’s most beautiful sites for a water event, Smith Mountain Lake.
Smith Mountain Lake has over 500 miles of shoreline and 32 square miles of surface area, but what really makes it a special destination is its unique location nestled in the Blue Ridge Mountains; the views of expansive open water scenes with skylines of vivid blue mountains is unparalleled as an open water swimming destination.
Bernard’s Landing, the premier resort on the lake, is the host site for the event. A community of condos and townhomes, as well as an award winning restaurant sits on one of the lake’s most beautiful peninsulas. As host to numerous weddings, festivals and business meetings we are honored to have Bernard’s Landing as the host site of our event.
The “Lake Swim” as it has come to be known begins on Saturday afternoon with the 5K event. Participants will be finished in time to have a quick free snack on site before heading off to take advantage of many of the local activities. Sunday’s events begin mid-morning with a series of 1 mile races and a ½ mile race for the 10&Unders. We have age groups ranging from the aforementioned little ones up through a 55&Over category – please visit out 2009 Race Info page for more details.
We are in our 4thconsecutive year of hosting at Bernard’s Landing and have had substantial increases in participation each year. This is truly an event for everyone,from the relaxed for fun swimmer to the highly trained age group and masters competitors.
